A woodblock-printed picture book entitled Kokon Meika Gaen (i.e., Collection of Famous Pictures From All Ages) was published in 1862. Edited by Bunshō Nomura, it included the seventeen pages of pictures of flowers and (or) birds shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Most of these pictures were drawn by two artists – Bunchō Tani and Bun’ichi Tani. Both used a drawing style adopted by Chinese artists who tried to capture the inner essence of their picture subjects instead of their actual shapes and colors. Today this style is called Nanga.
